Ask any field leader what makes a market work, and commission payouts will be near the top. Distributors forgive a slow website. They do not forgive a late or wrong payment. For US network marketing companies, the UK and the EU add a layer of rules that the US back office was not built for.
Paying European distributors from a US account works on paper and frustrates everyone in practice: international transfer fees, exchange-rate losses, payments that take days, and distributors who are not sure who is paying them or how to report it.
A local company with a local bank account changes that. Payments go out in pounds over UK Faster Payments or in euros over SEPA, usually arriving the same or next business day. Distributors see a local payer, a local invoice and a local contact for questions.
Two points matter here:
In the UK, most direct sellers are self-employed independent businesses, not employees. They register with HMRC and declare their income. Once a distributor's taxable turnover passes the VAT registration threshold, currently £90,000 a year, they must register for VAT and charge it on what they supply.
For you, that means:
The UK has specific rules for network marketing, under the Trading Schemes Regulations 1997. Among them:
These rules shape your starter kits, your refund process and your distributor agreement. Your compensation plan itself should be reviewed by counsel who knows UK and EU direct selling law.
Bank details, tax IDs, addresses and earnings of individual distributors are personal data under UK and EU data protection law. You need a lawful basis to process them, a privacy notice for distributors, secure storage and clear rules about who in your organization and your providers can see them. If a provider runs payouts or support for you, you need a data processing agreement with them.
Every commission run produces questions: "Why is my bonus lower this month?" "When does my rank update?" "Which invoice is this?" Answering them in the distributor's language, inside your back office, and with someone who understands compensation plans is what keeps your field calm on payday.
